Media Release - Hawker Community Expo Day, linking local business with new opportunities

30 April 2018

On Friday 4 May, Blue Burt Park in Hawker will be transformed into a hub of new business opportunities, with the Hawker Community Industry Expo Day.

The Wallerberdina Station Economic Working Group, in conjunction with the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science, will host the event to help local businesses learn about opportunities that would come alongside a National Radioactive Waste Management Facility.

A site outside of Hawker, Wallerberdina Station, is one of three being considered for the new federal government Facility, where radioactive waste, currently spread over more than 100 locations around the country, will be consolidated and safely managed.

In-depth community consultation and technical studies are currently underway at all three sites.

As part of this consultation, Economic Working Groups have been established to investigate the opportunities that would come with a Facility of this type, and this Expo is one of their initiatives.

Bruce Wilson, Principal Advisor to the National Radioactive Waste Management Taskforce, said the event will be a great opportunity for local businesses and the broader community.

“The Expo will bring local businesses and Government agencies together to showcase their expertise, highlight potential career opportunities and exchange information,” Wilson said.

“The economic opportunities that would come alongside the Facility are of keen interest to some in the community, and this Expo will help expand understanding of exactly what those are.

“Wherever the Facility is located, it will provide a significant employment and economic boost, and we will work to ensure communities can harness the benefits.

“Refreshments will be available along with entertainment for the kids, and entry is free.”

Attendees will include:
