The facility will pose no material risk to nearby waterways, lakes, dams or broader catchment areas.
The low-level radioactive materials will be permanently encased in multiple layers of concrete, as parts of its defence in-depth approach, which prevent either access or contact with the environment.
The project will be subject to Australia’s stringent environmental approvals and assessments as it comes under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
The technical assessment stage of the process to find a site will include studies to understand the site’s groundwater and surface water, geology and flora and fauna. All this is done in consultation with the community to be transparent.
